Citizenship: a political tool?
Many would say that the biggest challenges facing the continent are war, leadership, poverty, healthcare and corruption. But according to a new book by author Bronwen Manby - Struggle for Citizenship - Africa is facing a 'citizenship crisis', which affects millions of people across several countries, and it is said to be the cause of many conflicts in places like the DRC, Somalia, Ivory Coast and Nigeria. To what extent is citizenship really a priority for Africans? How do governments define citizenship? Is citizenship used as a political tool to marginalize minority groups? What is it like to be stateless or a non-citizen?
Studio guests: AGNES GITAU from the London Africa Media Network and ADE SOFOLA from the Citizenship Foundation. Also featuring interviews with BRONWEN MANBY from AfriMap and CHIDI ODINKALU from the Open Society Institute, and RAUFU MUSTAPHA from Oxford University.
