Black History Month: what history, whose culture?

October is Black History Month in Britain, a month celebrating the contributions Africans have made around the world - from the pyramids to politics, from civil rights to pop culture. It was inspired by BHM in the US, which was founded by Carter G. Woodson in 1926, and which is observed in February. As many African descendents in Britain and America are encouraged to learn more about their non-Western heritage, what about back home? What are Africans back home being taught about who they are, and does this fill them with pride or despair? Does culture belong to a particular people or to humanity as a whole? And would the return of great treasures like the Benin bronzes, kick start a new interest and respect for Africa's pre-colonial past?

Studio guests: BONNIE GREER, playwright and Deputy Chairman of the British Museum, and PAUL OBINNA, historian and lecturer. Also featuring Prof. JAMES SMALL, historian and consultant, Onyeka Nubia, writer and historian and Dr Tiffany Jenkins from the Institute of Ideas.
