Angola, Algeria : looks like they made it to the next round
A simple goalless draw on Monday was enough for the Angolan hosts but also for the Algerian Desert Foxes to make it to the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations.
As the final games in the continental Cup’s groups are taking place, we have a clear image of who is going to be in the next round. The Palancas Negras easily made it to their next match, since all they needed was at least one point to finish first in group A with five points. The Algerian team was qualified as well, even though it passed this first test with only four points, the same as Mali. But, having a head-to-head advantage over Mali, they left the West Africans out with a “useless” victory over Malawi in their record.
The Flames were caught unprepared when in the first 37 second Mali scored their first goal. Not having the time to overcome the shock of being the first team of this Nations Cup to concede a goal so quick in the game, three minutes later Keita kicked the ball into the Malawian net turning the score into 2-0. It took the Flames almost an hour to start burning again and score a goal. On the 58th minute, their star striker Russell Mwafulira used a loose ball to put a header over from two yards. Even though the Malawians pressured for an equaliser, Mali’s Bagayoko scored the third goal for his team, leaving Malawi in the bottom of group A with three points.
Looks like Mali and Malawi, despite their exciting game, will leave Angola dissapointed, since they did not make it to the quarter-finals.
