Campaigns begin for Mozambique election
Mozambique’s leading politicians are hitting the campaign trail ahead of the southern African country’s fourth elections since it became a multi-party democracy 15 years ago.
Current president and Frelimo party leader, Armando Guebuza, is hoping to continue his presidency in the face of challenges from Afonso Dhlakama of the Renamo party and the mayor of Beira city, Daviz Simango, who has founded his own breakaway opposition group, while seventeen parties and two coalitions battle for seat’s in the country’s Assembly for the Republic and provincial assemblies.
According to political analysts, Guebuza looks to continue Frelimo’s 34-year run as governing party, since Mozambique gained independence in 1975.
