The EU opens up to more refugees
The BBC has revealed that the European Commission is expected to unveil plans to permit refugees from poor nations and areas of conflict into European countries. It is hoped that the scheme will stop immigrants from attempting to enter Europe illegally.
The immigrants, mostly from Africa, often risk their lives and are subject to human traffickers en route to seeking refuge in Europe. Alarmingly, as reported by the BBC only 7% of all the refugees resettled around the world were accepted by EU countries.
The European Commission intends to help more people who have fled humanitarian crises, after it was publicized that in 2008, the 27-nation bloc accepted fewer than 6,000 people, compared to more than 60,000 resettled in the US.
The new system will hopefully give asylum seekers a greater chance to legally settle in Europe, with the aid of the EU nations. Belgium is leading the way, opening its doors to thirty-six refugees, affected by the war in Iraq, arriving from Syria and Jordan today.
