District 9 shortlisted for Oscar success

District 9 is poised for cinematic stardom after receiving four Oscar nominations for the 2010 awards. The film has been nominated for "Best Picture", "Best Film Editing", "Best Visual Effects" and "Best Writing-Adapted Screenplay".

The science fiction thriller was directed by South African, Neill Blomkamp and was inspired by events that took place in District six in Capetown during the apartheid era.

Controversy surrounded the film when the Nigerian government took offence to Nigerian characters portrayed as criminals, and banned the film from cinemas. However this failed to prevent District 9 from receiving widespread praise from critics and performing well at the box office.

Entertainment Weekly described the film as "madly original and cheekily political" and USA Today said "this is the most imaginative science-fiction movie to come along in years".

The 82nd annual Oscar awards will be held on 7 March 2010. We'll be keeping our fingers crossed for Neill Blomkamp and everyone involved with the film!
