Landslide topples buildings in eastern Asia

Typhoon Morakot slammed into China's Fujian province, bringing heavy rain and winds of 119 kilometres per hour. It landed on Sunday in Fujian province after slamming Taiwan over the weekend.

Authorities evacuated 1.4 million people in China, the official Xinhua News Agency said. Xinhua reported that an unknown number of residents were buried in the landslide, though Chen put the number at six. All were pulled out alive but two later died of their injuries.

In Taiwan, the military rescued about 260 victims Tuesday from the area around a village covered by a massive mudslide, local TV stations reported. Taiwanese authorities put the confirmed death toll from Morakot at 41 and listed 60 people as missing. Rescue efforts are underway in mountain villages affected by landslides caused by the storm. The Taiwanese government says this is the worst storm to hit Taiwan in over 50 years.
