Afghanistan deputy head of intelligence killed
Abdullah Laghmani, Afghanistan’s deputy head of intelligence was killed in what a spokesperson for the interior ministry confirmed as a suicide attack.
The bomber hit during an inauguration ceremony at a Mosque in the city of Mehtar Lam, 60 miles east of the capital.
The ceremony was attended by other government officials and dozens of civilians. 21 other people are believed dead.
Zubiullah Mujahid, a spokesman for the Taliban, publicized that Laghmani, number two at Afghanistan’s national directorate of security, had been directly targeted, along with the other government officials who attended the ceremony.
A witness, quoted by Reuters, saw a pick-up truck carrying wounded people covered in blood and eight ambulances left the scene heading towards Jalalabad, the nearest big city. The attack verifies the Taliban’s determination to mount direct and violent assaults against high profile targets, intensifying ethnic tensions following the 20 August presidential election.
