USA-Cuba resume immigration talks

Tuesday sees the recommencement of migration talks between the United States of America and Cuba, after a 2003 suspension by former US president George W. Bush.

Washington had offered to resume talks with Havana in May, after Barak Obama had described past US policy towards Cuba a failure.

The two nations will resume talks on Cuban migration to the United States and are expected to focus on re-implementing an agreement between the two countries from 1995, which permitted US interception of Cuban migrants to the United States whilst at sea, and repatriating them back home.  In return Havana promised that repatriated migrants would not face reprisals once they were returned back to the Communist Caribbean island.  The deal also saw the United States grant 20,000 US visas to Cuba every year.

The Obama administration has already authorised travel and money transfers to the Caribbean island by US nationals of Cuban descent as part of efforts towards a new benevolent US foreign policy.
