Fidel Castro unveils Memoir and Cuba celebrates Revolutionary Day
Former Cuban President, Fidel Castro has revealed plans to release the first volume of his memoir, a book focused on how a few as 300 revolutionaries defeated the Cuban army of 10,000 in 1958. The Strategic Victory is set to be released in August, 2010.
In commemoration of Cuba celebrating its Revolution day, Mr Castro, made a brief appearance at a wreath laying ceremony in Havana on Monday, but did not attend the festivities in Santa Clara earlier in the day.
A B-team of socialist speakers spent Cuba's Revolution Day criticizing the United States, portraying Washington as the great villain in world affair. They spoke about its drug consumption, war in Iraq to its military support for Colombia.
But the day was more notable for who didn't address the crowd; it was the first in memory in which neither President Raul Castro or Fidel Castro spoke, leaving some in the crowd and on Cuba's streets disappointed and perplexed. The former Cuban leader mostly shunned the spotlight since undergoing emergency intestinal surgery in July 2006; forcing him to step down and relinquish power to his younger brother Raul. Raul appeared on Venezuelan and Cuban television discussing new economic ties with Venezuela and saying Cuba stands with its ally in its dispute with Colombia. The Castro often use July 26 Revolution Day - the most important date on Cuba's calendar - to set the agenda for the coming year and announce major changes.
The country is in the grips of a painful economic downturn, and there have been increasing warnings from intellectuals that corruption is eating away at the revolution's foundations. Raul Castro has made halting efforts to open the economy, while encouraging Cubans to work harder and stop depending on the state for everything. The government is also in the midst of fulfilling a pledge to release 52 political prisoners jailed since 2003, a major concession that has some hoping more change might be on the way.
