Celebrities united for Haiti
The humanitarian tragedy in Haiti after last Tuesday's earthquake has touched everyone all over the world. The news about the disaster reached Hollywood as well and the world's superstars immediately united to raise money for the people of Haiti. Wyclef Jean was one of the first to travel to his hometown to support his people and figure out ways to raise awareness and money for his country. What he did was offer the chance to everyone to contribute and get involved by easily making a donation to his Yele Haiti Earthquake Fund via internet or telephone.
Tonight the Oprah Winfrey Show will dedicate a live hour to the catastrophic event. Wyclef will be there to tell his story about the situation he witnessed when he visited his native land a few days ago. In his efforts the Grammy-winning singer is not alone. Rihanna will be singing at the Oprah Winfrey Show tonight to show her support, while R&B artist Maxwell will sing "Fistful of Tears" and then share his own story about how his Haitian roots led him to helping fight hunger there during the past years.
In Germany the paper BILD and its charity organisation "A heart for children" raised eighteen million for Haiti in a telethon that was broadcast last night. The German superstar Sarah Connor, close friend of Wyclef Jean, sang wearing a "Yele Haiti" shirt to show her support. Larry King's "Haiti How You Can Help" telethon on Monday raised five million dollars for the Red Cross and UNICEF. Larry had his own cast of celebrities to support the cause; Jennifer Lopez, Snoop Dogg, Paula Abdul, Molly Simms, Susan Sarandon and Scarlett Johansson are some of them.
And talking about Hollywood superstars, the celebrity couple Pitt-Jolie could not stay out of the picture. Brad and Angelina offered one million dollars in aid from their foundation and stated that they are fully supporting their friend Wyclef Jean in his efforts. The "Hollywood Unites for Haiti" organisation also created a Relief Fund to gather money and help Haitians recover. Its founder, Jimmy Jean-Louis immediately flew to Haiti to deliver supplies and help in the rescues. Sandra Bullock donated one million dollars as well to Doctors Without Borders, Madonna took out of her wallet $250,000 for Partners in Health, one of Haiti's leading healthcare providers, while the top model Giselle topped the list of donors with $1,5 million dollars to Red Cross for relief for Haiti's victims. And that is not all...
More money is expected to be raised for Haiti as celebrities just can't stay home. Hollywood superstar George Clooney will play the role of the presenter this Friday in a new telethon under the title "Hope for Haiti". Will George be more influential to raise more money than his predecessors? And who will be the celebrities that haven't yet made an appearance waiting to walk on George's red carpet? All will be revealed on Friday.
