The upcoming Togo elections

The Togolese Governmental elections that were set for the 28th of February have been delayed till the 4th of March to give the present government more time to prepare its voter’s registration process and security arrangements on the day of the vote.

According to an official statement released on the 26th of February says the delay came "in the spirit of the search of national consensus and peace."The leading contender is the current president, Faure Gnassingbe who seized control in 2005 after the death of his father, military leader, Gnassingbe Eyadema, who held the presidency since 1967.

However, five opposition parties in Togo have united in support of opposition candidate, Jean-Pierre Fabre who is running against Gnassingbe for the 4th of March presidential election. The oppositional parties have formed the Republican Front for Change in Power (FRAC), which was revealed to the world on the 24th of February in the Togolese capital, Lome.

FRAC comprises the Alliance of Democrats for Integral Development (ADDI) led by AimTchabour Guogu, the Alliance led by Dahuku Pere, the Socialist Pact for Regeneration (PSR) led by Tchessa Abi, Sursaut-Togo led by Kofi Yamgnane and the Union of Forces for Change (UFC) led by veteran politician Gilchrist Olympio.

The FRAC has vowed to achieve a major change in Togo and are preparing to launch its campaign for change on the 2 days before the election takes place.
