Abdel Basset al-Megrahi, a Libyan native has launched a second appeal in an effort to reverse his lengthy sentence.
In 2001 Megrahi was convicted of bombing a US airliner which killed 270 people, when it flew over the Scottish town of Lockerbie in 1988. Among the dead included 11 people on the ground who were instantly killed when wreckage from the plane fell from the sky.
The 57 year old, who has been diagnosed with prostate cancer is not in court but is following the proceedings via a video link from his prison. Megrahi already lost one appeal in 2001 and it is predicted that his hearing will last four weeks.
