Google finds new ways to gain popularity in Africa

Google is sponsoring a contest to encourage students in Tanzania and Kenya to publish articles on their national version of Wikipedia. Prizes will be awarded to those who do the best job in translating articles from the English Wikipedia into the Kiswahili language. This contest stems from Google's quest to have more search options available online on subjects in different languages.

Gabriel Stricker, Google's spokesman says, "Our ability to get the right answer is hindered by the lack of quality and lack of quantity of material on the Internet." There are many gaps in the universally popular search engine because large populations in the Arab world, India, and Africa lack the know-how of creating websites.

So far, Google says, this contest has attracted 900 articles from more than 800 contributors. While the contest does offer exciting prizes such as laptops and cell-phones, one of the Kenyan finalists says he wished it would benefit those who do not speak English. This sentiment is shared by many other finalists of the contest. Winners are to be announced on Friday.
