More than 100 people, mostly women and children, sought shelter in a hotel where journalists and military commanders were staying, when Automatic weapons fire broke out after dark on Tuesday in a Nigerian city located near villages where massacres just two days ago left more than 200 people dead. Acting President Goodluck Jonathan had promised that the fighting would stop after more than 300 people were killed in similar outbreaks in January and sacked his national security adviser on Monday.

A 24-year-old Colombian man has officially became the world's shortest man. Edward Nino Hernandez has been certified as the world's shortest living mobile male by Guinness World Records, measuring just 27.46 inches. The previous titleholder was He Pingping of China, who was an inch or so taller and died in March.
