What can Africa learn from FIFA 2010?
Last week, President Jacob Zuma was in London on a state visit to promote UK-South Africa business relations. Zuma's trip attracted the biggest Southn African trade delegation ever seen in any European country. Since the end of Apartheid, South Africa has hosted the Rugby World Cup in 1995, the Africa Cup of Nations in 1996, the Cricket World Cup in 2003 and the Confederations Cup last year. And there is talk of a bid for the Olympics in 2020.
So, what is the legacy of these international tournaments? Should other African nations follow the example? What’s the potential impact of such events on local economies and development? And how will FIFA 2010impact on Africa’s image and reputation worldwide?
