Population growth: what implications for Africa?
Population is back on the agenda. The number of consumers with a carbon footprint keeps on rising and the world’s population is currently about 6.8 billion strong, and it is expected to peak at 9 billion in 2050. The rise is most dramatic in developing nations, with a country like Nigeria with a population of 50 million in 1960, now containing over 140 million people. Many experts say this cannot continue without terrible implications for resources like food, water, land, and ultimately the climate - something must change. The question is what? And is population the real issue?
Studio guests: Dr PATRICIA DALEY from the School of Geography and the Environment at Oxford University, and SIMON ROSS from the Optimum Population Trust. Also featuring, Karen Newman from the Population and Sustainability Network and Luwezi Kinshasa from African Socialist International.
