Drugs in West Africa: the new South America?

Last week foremost experts on drug crime met at London's Parliament to discuss the increasing drug trade from Latin America to Europe via West Africa. Poor economies, weak states and corrupt institutions in the region mean that officials and others can easily be bought off. Ninety-nine per cent of all drugs seized in Africa are in West Africa, and, in some, the value of the drugs trade outstrips national income. But apparently, the amounts found are only 'the tip of the iceberg'. What is the nature of the drug trade? What are its effects at local, national, regional and international level? And what needs to be done about it?

Studio guests: Dr AXEL KLEIN, Lecturer in the study of addictive behaviour at the University of Kent, and TAMAR GOOD, from the charity HIBISCUS www.hibiscuslondon.org.uk. Also featuring, Dr. Kwesi Aning from the Kofi Annan International Peace Keeping Training Centre in Ghana www.kaiptc.org/home and Stephen Ellis, Desmond Tutu Professor in the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Amsterdam.
