AFRICOM: what is it and what is it about?

The United States Africa Command (or AFRICOM) is responsible for U.S. military operations and military relations with 53 African nations - an area of responsibility covering all of Africa except Egypt. It was set up post 9/11 and officially established in 2007, with the aim to run all America’s military operations in Africa, as well as improving security and bringing development across the continent. But would a strong US base for freedom and democracy help shore up the broader dreams and aspirations of the African people? Is Africom a body that Africans should embrace or is it one that African governments should be wary of, because the real intention is more sinister - a grab for oil and natural resources? And would America’s foreign policy towards Africa change under President Obama?

Studio guests: KNOX CHITIYO, head of the Africa Programme at Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) http://www.rusi.org/ and journalist and film maker, CALLUM MACRAE http://www.outsidertv.co.uk/. Also featuring Prof. Jeremy Keenan from the School of Oriental and African Studies.
